Synergy in Harry Potter Poster

Synergy is when two products are used and paired together as advertisment to attempt to improve the sales of one product and also make a profit out of the other product. Examples of these products can be soundtracks to movies released on CD, bonus footage of the movie and other merchandise.

You can clearly tell that the trailer for the new Harry Potter film is connected to the poster because they both have similar designs. They both include the main characters with the poster showing them right in the middle. The font of the text is very important when creating a brand or a range of products because the logo and font are what people will recognise, Warner Brothers have clearly shown this as they both use the same font style and logo in the trailer and the poster. The color scheme in both of the advertisments is very similar too, we see dark colors with glimmers of light in the background and similar colors of clothing.

Codes and Conventions of Harry Potter

The Codes and Conventions of a film or trailer include a range of different things, from camera techniques, colours, outfits and music.

Here is a link to the new trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CndMW6FLEiI&feature=fvst

The music used in the trailer is slow and very old fashioned, this type of music is used because it fits in well with the Harry Potter story, although Harry Potter is based in the modern day, we usually associate magic with medieval times, so the music is very fitting. The dramatic and heroic music along with the opera singing in the background present the genre of the film very well.

Camera angles are crucial in movies and trailers because they can add all sorts of effects to the clip. In one part of the trailer, an extreme close up is used to zoom in on one side of Harrys face to show his eye, this is used to show he is scared and aware, and makes the clip seem very dramatic, drawing viewers in. There are also lots of birds eye views used, particularly around half way through the clip where it shows a birds eye view of Harry, as the camera slowly moves into him, this leads viewers to believe that the camera is a creature moving closer to him, making the viewers feel like a part of the whole experiance.

Mise en Scene is important in trailers because trailers are a type of advertisment for your film so they must be accurate. The costumes used in the trailer are effective because the theme of Harry Potter is Wizardry, so the robes and capes fit in perfectly because this is what we would stereotypically match with a wizard. Typically the villain is dressed in all black to signify evil and the main characters are dressed in more colorful clothing.

Camera Shots and Edits can be very effective in showing what the film is about or what is going on in a scene, they can also portray moods in films like fear or tension. In the Harry Potter trailer lots of fast camera edits to show panic or fear and fast paced action. There are also lots of slow camera movements used to create tension and anxiety from the viewer.

Purpose of Film Magazine covers, Posters and Trailers

Movies always require good advertisment in order for them to sell to their full potential, this goes for all films including blockbuster hits and films released by small individual companies.

Advertisment is key in all products but it matters especially to films that are shown on cinema because going to the cinema is considered a luxury, therefor people generally wont think about going to the cinema unless they see an advertisment or something else to persuade them to go.

Film producers and the people in charge of marketing and advertising will have to think about where to advertise their product, the general places film companies will advertise their product includes Magazines, television trailers, posters on the likes of Bus Stops, supermarkets etc.

The purpose of advertising is to show the customers the product, to inform them about what it is and whats included in the product, and more importantly, it tells them to go buy or view the product. The best place to advertise films is in magazines made specifically for movies, television trailers and posters, this is because the television is a product that almost everybody owns, this means the trailer will get seen by billions of people, and will be shown to lots of different types of person, so it tends for the mass market. Adverts in film magazines are effective because they target the movie followers audience, and people buy those magazines specifically to see what new films are being shown and what is in development.

Here is an example of a poster that would typically be shown outside a cinema, it is of the most recent Harry Potter Film, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'. As you can see it provides a picture of actor Daniel Radcliffe, the main character in the Harry Potter films, it also includes the date of release for the film.

Here is the front cover of a Total Film magazine advertising the film Inception, as you can see it shows a picture of the main characters actor Lionardo Dicaprio, along with the title in bold text.

Film trailers will be shown on the television mainly but will sometimes be advertised on the internet or radio with companies that have a cheaper budget. When advertised on the television it will be aired at specific times to appeal to a specific audience, for example if the trailer was to be aired late at night it would appeal to adults more, or if it was aired at around four o clock, it would most likely be targeted at children. Most television adverts will include fitting music to match the genre or story, along with specially picked clips of the film.

Introduction to Coursework

For my coursework i have been asked by L31 Productions to produce either a two minute trailer or two sixty second trailers of a film to be created with the genre of my choice.

To help me with the creation of my film trailer I will research different trailers that have previously been used for past succesful films and try to gain an insight to the Film industry and try to get inspiration from these past trailers. I will also research the other promotional types for movies to get a closer look at the industry.

My initial task is to identify the purpose of trailers posters and film magazine front covers in the marketing of a new film. I will then follow a link provided to me to watch a previous Harry Potter trailer so it can be analysed and used to help me create my trailer.
